Richard Weston – Top professional tips and tricks

This was not Richard’s first visit to the club and, hopefully it won’t be his last. Richard is an active Professional photographer and director of Weston Digital Imaging and Media. Their work involves a wide variety including corporate and catalogue work. Increasingly they are also working with video as well as stills. The wedding side is kept separate – One fine day – where the target market is the high end, £4K + spent by the couple on their photography. Quite a different background to…

Practical night – Tabletop photography with Mark Wilbrey

Mark Wilbrey was back at the club to delver another session, this time table top photography. He started off by telling us about some of the things that he finds useful to have around for table top photography: Bulldog clips Laminate flooring fitting wedges Matt spray, clear – dulls down reflective surfaces – spray on, wipe off – probably best used outdoors given the fumes. White balance target to set an in-camera custom WB He prefers to use a macro lens for this type of photography.…

Mach Loop – some additional information

I thought that the name came from Mach 1, Mach 2 etc – supersonic flight speeds. I didn’t realise that the ‘Mach Loop’ was named after a town that I’ve visited numerous times since 1973 – Machynlleth. At one time I applied for a job at a school there. The application form was all in Welsh. I didn’t fill it in. Since then though I have made an effort every so often to learn some Welsh. This has helped me when interpreting the landscape I’m walking through.…

Richard Weston – portrait session practical night

Richard Weston – was invited to the club to provide a presentation on portrait lighting and posing on a practical night. Richard’s business is photography based, Weston Digital Imaging. To help with this he brought along Annabel, a model from SoT. As has been a recent trend for me, here are a few notes on the session with some added detail input from myself. The starting point with any portrait photo is to consider gender, age and intended style. Each of these can influence the lighting…

Derek Doar – Modern conversion of digital files to monochrome images using Nik SilverEfex

The objective for the evening was very clear – quality conversion of digital image files into monochrome. I’ve been using a very much slimmed down version of Silver Efex  that is integral to Nikon’s CNX2 software for many years and, more recently, the Photoshop plug-in with my Canon files. When Google purchased Nik they did a ‘free complete suite if you have previously purchased one of their plug-ins’. I had the Colour Efex Pro 3 plug-in for CNX2 and therefore qualified for the complete package…

Roger on the panel – Roger Hague DPAGB

It has been quite a few years since we last had a ‘panel of’ competition at the club. With the return of a competition round on the 10th March 2014 that is dedicated to panels Roger was invited to share his thoughts and experience. Before Roger started I let him know that my using a ‘phone during his presentation was to make notes that would form the basis for this blog post. He was openly happy for people to be taking notes. So, here is…

Practical workshop 30/09/13

Following the questionnaire at the end of last season showing that members wanted more on close-up and macro photography, this session was aimed at those areas. There were four setups, two flash and two with Lupo HMI lights. Various objects and sets were available for members including items that they brought with them. Unusually for me I did not actually take any photographs on the night, too busy with the setups and helping people. I did however take a few earlier in the day when…
