Photographing Cheadle Cats version of ‘Allo, Allo’

For quite a few years there has been a link-up between Blythe Bridge Camera Club and Cheadle CATS. On Sunday 23rd October it was time for their full dress rehearsal and time to setup a photo studio in the school canteen.Wendy arrived with her usual early promptness and soon the large car ( SUV type vehicle ) was loaded with the gear. Converting the canteen at Cheadle Academy into two photography studios takes quite a lot. Once inside the two setups started to be put…

Best of the rest competition 19th September 2016

Entries for the ‘Best of the rest’ competition had to have been entered in a competition last year but not been awarded first, second or third. It was the first time we have had this competition. The idea was to give images that did not appeal to the whims of the judge on the night a chance for recognition. It is the only time that entries from a previous season have been knowingly allowed to be used in another season. Judge: Barbara Lawton Intermediate category Place Title Photographer…

Mach Loop – some additional information

I thought that the name came from Mach 1, Mach 2 etc – supersonic flight speeds. I didn’t realise that the ‘Mach Loop’ was named after a town that I’ve visited numerous times since 1973 – Machynlleth. At one time I applied for a job at a school there. The application form was all in Welsh. I didn’t fill it in. Since then though I have made an effort every so often to learn some Welsh. This has helped me when interpreting the landscape I’m walking through.…

Alton Towers Competition

The Alton Towers competition is something that gives club members a unique challenge each year. Everyone has the same subject matter available and the same lighting conditions. This year was made more challenging by the weather which, for most of the 90 minutes was either overcast cloud or rain. We did have a glimmer of sunlight just towards the end. This meant that I was even more eager and also nervous to see what people had achieved on the night. The time and resources provided…

Open Print Competition – 18th November 2013

This was our second print open competition of the season. In between the two was a PDI open. Whilst the Intermediate category had a full entry the Advanced category seemed to be a little lighter than is usual. I know that some members in this category were away on holiday during the time entries had to be submitted. Our judge for the competition was John Royle ( CPAGB ) who had come over from Nantwich. He was presented with quite a variety of images. Landscapes / seascapes…

Richard Weston – portrait session practical night

Richard Weston – was invited to the club to provide a presentation on portrait lighting and posing on a practical night. Richard’s business is photography based, Weston Digital Imaging. To help with this he brought along Annabel, a model from SoT. As has been a recent trend for me, here are a few notes on the session with some added detail input from myself. The starting point with any portrait photo is to consider gender, age and intended style. Each of these can influence the lighting…

Derek Doar – Modern conversion of digital files to monochrome images using Nik SilverEfex

The objective for the evening was very clear – quality conversion of digital image files into monochrome. I’ve been using a very much slimmed down version of Silver Efex  that is integral to Nikon’s CNX2 software for many years and, more recently, the Photoshop plug-in with my Canon files. When Google purchased Nik they did a ‘free complete suite if you have previously purchased one of their plug-ins’. I had the Colour Efex Pro 3 plug-in for CNX2 and therefore qualified for the complete package…
